Which iPod Is Right For You?
July 28th, 2005
A few recent comments, both here and on iChat, have got me to thinking about the decision process when buying an iPod (or any MP3 player for that matter), and I think I’ll be writing a few entries on how to get an iPod on the cheap. Before that, though, you may want to know which one is really right for you. Christopher Breen at playlistmag.com has written a really informative article about that very subject:
“Now that Apple offers three versions of its diminutive music player—the iPod shuffle, the iPod mini, and the color iPod (including the iPod U2 Special Edition and most HP-branded models)—at prices ranging from $99 to $400, there’s far more to consider. Will a small iPod or a large iPod serve you better? And is there any advantage to owning Apple’s iPod instead of one branded with the HP logo? I’ve had my hands on every iPod model Apple has released, so I’m in a unique position to give advice on finding the iPod that’ll be the best fit for you”

My personal decision (a 2nd Gen 4 Gig silver Mini) was based primarily on form factor and price, but I have to say that if I had the money right now, those color screens are awfully darn pretty. Being an amateur photographer, I think that would be a really nice feature.

I’ve been living off the music feature on my Palm Pilot for the past three years, but seeing as the backscreen was busted recently in an unfortunate incident, I’m looking to finally invest in an iPod.
But after reading the article, I’m terribly conflicted. I’d like the color-screen iPod simply because it offers more space (my music collection is pushing 20 gigs at the moment), but the less-charge-more-playtime of the iPod Mini is also appealing.
Have you considered making a LiveJournal feed for iPod Nirvana? It’d make it much easier for me to track the updates, from the comfort of my friends page.
