Scripting iTunes
August 6th, 2005
Did you know that iTunes is scriptable?
I didn’t.
That is… I did, but I didn’t realize exactly how many cool scripts are available. I just kind of thought that you would have to go and make your own. Thanks to the amazing interweb, and very smart and generous people, though… you don’t.
Probably the best place to find stuff to make iTunes do tricks is the appropriately named, Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes. You can find scripts for everything: managing files, tracks, playlists; exporting tracks… even exporting music from your iPod.
As it turns out, even Apple has some clever little scripts available. They have 21 scripts available for download all bundled up in one StuffIt file. I think these may be kind of old, and don’t know if all of them will work on iTunes 4.9. Some of the cooler ones, though, are “Search Track Comments” which automatically builds a playlist on your query, Set Genre to Specific EQ, iPod Library Summary, and a CDNow search.
You may also be interested in another scripts site called Scriptbuilders.net which has a lot more than just iTunes/iPod stuff.
