Do iPod Nanos Break Easily?

September 17th, 2005

Last night, I got a new comment on the Free iPod Nanos post. “Myes Blah” asked, “Do iPod nanos break easily?”

The most direct answer is: no… not at all

Given it’s miniscule size, you would think that it might not be as tough as it’s bigger cousins, or players made entirely from metal. Well, not only is the Nano “impossibly small”, but it’s amazingly tough.

In fact, Ars Technica did an amazing review of the Nano on the 11th, where they not only went over it’s actual usable qualities, but took the thing apart to look at it’s inner workings, and put it through a “stress test”.

This “stress-test” consisted of sitting on it, dropping it from normal heights several times, throwing it from a moving car at various speeds, throwing it extremely high in the air and letting it land on the pavement, and ultimately running over it with the car. The important thing to consider, here, is that each of these tests were done on the same Nano.

The results were incredibly impressive… Read the article. You’ll be surprised and impressed with the point which the little guy finally gave up the ghost.

Weizgei, I don’t remember where I read it online, but someone else tried to break it that way, and was barely able to make it flex using all their strength.

My son got a nano for christmas and has been very careful with it. He even got a tough rubber case to protect it. Last night he brought it to us in tears with the screen cracked and not working at all. it either fell off a shelf about 3 feet high next to his bed or someone mysteriously stepped on it, but it is definitely broken!

I've removed the little flash player that was here for now. It was causing some problems with the site in several browsers... okay... mostly it was IE6 because... well... I'm fairly sure that Microsoft hates me.
